When Does a Soldier Retire, and Why Is the Transition Challenging ?

About Us

Most soldiers join the Armed Forces between the ages of 17 to 21. On average, 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers retire each year, and a significant proportion of them are still in the prime of their lives—between 35 to 45 years of age. These brave individuals have dedicated the best years of their lives to protecting our nation, often serving in some of the harshest and most demanding conditions.

However, once their service ends and they transition back into civilian life, the journey is far from easy.

The shift from uniform to civilian attire presents numerous challenges:

  • Many retiring soldiers have limited awareness of the civilian job market, career options, or entrepreneurship opportunities.
  • A large number hail from Tier 3 towns and rural backgrounds, with minimal exposure to technology, online job portals, or modern hiring practices.
  • There's often a lack of structured career guidance or mentorship during the transition phase.
  • As a result, many veterans take up roles far below their capability and potential, despite possessing strong discipline, leadership, teamwork, and crisis-management skills.

At the same time, many employers are eager to hire ex-servicemen, recognizing the tremendous value they bring—but often lack the channels to connect with them.

About Us

Project Veer – A Veteran’s Second Innings Partner.

Project Veer, an initiative by Veteran Second Innings Foundation, aims to bridge this critical gap between retired soldiers and meaningful civilian employment. Our mission is to support our veterans as they transition into civilian roles, ensuring they find respectable, skill-matched, and stable employment or entrepreneurial opportunities.

We believe that retirement from the Forces should not mean retirement from purpose. Through Project Veer, we aspire to become a soldier’s true partner in their second innings—from defense to dignified civilian life.

With Project Veer, we are taking an even more personalized approach to guide our Ex-servicemen:

  • Dedicated mentors help source jobs across India and assist ESM in their upskilling and resettlement journeys.
  • Our teams are present at various Indian Army regiments across the country, where they regularly interact with retiring soldiers.
  • We conduct skilling programs, provide career and self-employment guidance, and help in resume-building and interview preparation, working tirelessly to smoothen this challenging transition.

Beyond Jobs – Supporting the Families Left Behind

About Us

Alongside veteran placement, we also provide:

  • Educational grants to children of widows and orphans, ensuring they can continue their primary and higher education without financial disruption.
  • Skill development and self-employment programs for Veer Naris (war widows) to help them build sustainable livelihoods and achieve independence.

Empowered by the compassion and support they receive, the widows of our soldiers find renewed hope, healing, and strength to carry forward the legacy of their loved ones with pride. Through this, we not only support their survival but also honor the sacrifices made by their families in service to the nation.

About Us

A Bridge Between Citizens and Soldiers.

The people of India have deep love and respect for our soldiers but often lack a meaningful way to express it. Project Veer aims to become that bridge between citizens and soldiers, giving people a tangible way to support and stand by those who have stood for us.

Together, let us ensure that every soldier and their family continues to live with the dignity, opportunity, and honor they rightfully deserve.
